Diving with children on Curaçao

Discovering the underwater world together, step by step and at your child's pace

Curaçao is one of the best places in the world to introduce children to the underwater world. The warm, clear water, calm bays, and the many beaches with easy entry make the island especially suitable for young adventurers who are curious about what lives beneath the surface.

For many families, diving together in Curaçao becomes something special. Not only because it’s an activity you experience together, but also because it often creates memories that come up in conversations for years to come: the first time breathing underwater, spotting a turtle together, or excitedly sharing what everyone discovered afterwards. These are exactly the kind of moments that give a holiday extra meaning.

At the same time, diving with children is something you build up calmly and thoughtfully. Not everything has to happen at once, and nothing needs to be rushed. With the right guidance, a relaxed pace, and attention to the child, it can become a safe and unforgettable experience.

From what age can children learn to dive?

Children can get to know diving in a playful way at a young age in Curaçao.

For 8- and 9-year-olds, there are special children’s programs where they learn to breathe with a small scuba set in shallow water. The focus is mainly on getting used to the water, discovering, and having fun, not on performance.

There are also programs like Scuba Explorer from SSI, where children first snorkel and then gradually get acquainted with scuba diving, up to a maximum depth of about 5 meters. Some versions also include other water activities, such as freediving or even a mermaid experience. Ecology and caring for nature are also playfully addressed. The main goal is to become familiar with the water and what can be seen beneath the surface.

Some organizations offer similar children’s programs, but these are often only allowed in a swimming pool. Since many dive schools in Curaçao do not have their own pool and the sea here is so calm and clear, programs given from the beach are often a more natural and enjoyable experience during a beach holiday.

From the age of 10, children can start a real diving course.

The minimum age for an Open Water course is 10 years. Young participants receive a Junior Open Water certification, with some extra rules and adjustments:

  • Children aged 10 and 11 may dive to a maximum depth of 12 meters and must always enter the water under the supervision of a dive professional.
  • Youths aged 12 to 14 may dive up to 18 meters, but must dive together with an adult, certified buddy, such as a parent.
  • From the age of 15, you are considered ‘adult’ in the diving world. You then receive a regular Open Water certification without the junior qualification and may dive with a buddy within the normal limits.

Is diving suitable for every child?

Almost anyone can learn to dive. Children don’t need to be extremely athletic, as long as they feel reasonably comfortable in the water, are healthy, and are open to a new experience.

The most important thing is that a child wants it themselves. Curiosity often works better than encouragement. Some children are enthusiastic right away, others need a bit more time to get used to it. Both are fine.

Experience shows that children who feel comfortable in the sea and enjoy snorkeling in Curaçao often have the most fun during their first diving experience.

A calm and personal approach

When guiding children, personal attention is extra important. Many dive schools in Curaçao therefore choose to work with small groups. Often this means one-on-one, or one instructor with two children—especially if they are siblings.

For families, it is often possible to dive at the same time, with multiple guides. This way, everyone can enter the water at their own level, while still sharing the same experience together.

It is precisely this shared experience that makes it so special for many families. Parents seeing their child breathe underwater for the first time, children who can’t stop talking about what they saw afterwards—these are the moments that give a holiday that little bit extra.

Taking it slow works best

What often works well with a diving course for children is not to schedule the program too tightly. Instead of three intensive days in a row, it’s often nicer to keep a more relaxed pace, for example with a day in between for other activities or just relaxing by the pool.

Many dive schools in Curaçao are open to such flexible planning. This helps prevent fatigue and ensures that children can process everything better. A dive day, however fun, is quite intensive. Even children with seemingly endless energy can be quite tired in the evening.

A slower build-up has another advantage: what they learn has time to really sink in. Skills stick better and confidence often grows naturally.

Teaching children to dive is custom work. It’s not about learning as quickly as possible, but about learning well, safely, and with enjoyment.

Explaining theory at a child’s level

A diving course also includes theory. Although there are junior certifications, the teaching material is usually the same as for adults.

This means that sometimes a translation is needed. Concepts need to be explained more simply, the pace is a bit slower, and there is more room for questions. An instructor who takes the time for this and is good with children makes a big difference.

Fortunately, there are many instructors in Curaçao with experience in teaching young divers. Still, it’s wise to ask about this when booking. Some people naturally feel more at home guiding children than others, and you can immediately notice this in how relaxed a child feels.

When a child feels understood and can follow the explanation well, their confidence underwater often grows naturally.

An experience to remember together

For many families, diving together in Curaçao becomes more than just an activity. It becomes a shared experience. Seeing a turtle for the first time, swimming over a reef together, telling each other afterwards what you saw—these are memories that last.

For some children, this first diving experience forms the basis for a lifelong hobby or maybe even a career as a dive professional. Others keep it to that one special holiday. But it’s precisely that first introduction to the underwater world that can be a moment to look back on with a smile for a long time.

And maybe that’s the best part: not how deep you went or how many dives you made, but that you experienced it together.
