Assistant Instructor Course

The Assistant Instructor qualification is the next step after obtaining a Divemaster certification in the dive instructor pathway. It allows you to gain valuable teaching experience, practice briefings, give theory lessons, and conduct in-water training sessions.

Over the course of six days, you will work with our (Assistant) Instructor Trainer or Master Instructor, and together with other candidates, we will simulate situations in which dive lessons are given—both theory in the classroom and skills in the water.

As an SSI Assistant Instructor, you are allowed to:

  • Work in the dive industry worldwide;
  • Lead guided dives (for certified divers);
  • Under the indirect supervision of an instructor, conduct all theory lessons and most confined water skills (except emergency ascents) of the open water course;
  • Independently conduct the Try Scuba program;
  • Independently conduct the Explorer program (for children from 8 years old); 
  • Independently teach Skindiver and snorkel courses.

What do you need?

  • At least 40 logged dives to start and 60 to become certified;
  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Hold an SSI Divemaster certification (or equivalent from another organization);
  • Have completed a React Right or other first aid course (primary and secondary care, emergency oxygen, AED) within the past 2 years;

Be fit enough to dive and submit a medical statement signed by a physician.
