Superior Producer wreck

Dive to the famous Superior Producer wreck at the megapiers of Curaçao — the most beautiful and best-preserved shipwreck on the island, surrounded by colorful corals and abundant marine life.

One of our most popular trips is to the 50-meter-long wreck of the Superior Producer, the best-preserved wreck that Curaçao has to offer.

On September 30, 1977, the ship Superior Producer, built in 1957 in Friesland, was en route from the Sint Anna Bay to Isla Margarita (Venezuela), fully loaded with luxury goods such as whiskey, perfume, bags, jeans, and other clothing. Upon departure from the port of Willemstad, the ship immediately ran into trouble. The portholes were still open, the ship was overloaded, and also poorly loaded. The ship soon began to sink. 

To prevent the ship from sinking in the harbor, it was towed westward by a tugboat to the spot where it still lies today, at a depth of 30 meters—ideal for (advanced) divers.

Nothing remains of the ship’s cargo today. It was “rescued” (or you could say: plundered) by anyone who could get their hands on it. Many inexperienced treasure divers paid for this with decompression sickness or other diving ailments.

Today, the wreck lies right next to the second megapier, and diving is only allowed when there are no cruise ships docked.

The wreck is a beautiful artificial reef, richly covered with various types of corals and sponges, and attracts many fish such as tarpons, barracudas, and jacks, as well as plenty of smaller marine life.

Due to the depth, an Advanced certification is required for this trip.
If you don’t have it yet, you can also make this dive during your Advanced course (5 dives).

We usually combine a dive on the Superior with the adjacent Double Reef, but it is also possible to plan two or even three dives on the Superior. Want to further expand your skills? Then this is a great opportunity to earn your SSI Wreck Diving specialty during this trip.
