Discover a new way of diving. With a DPV, you move effortlessly through the water, cover greater distances, and experience the reef from a completely new perspective.
More distance. Less effort. More freedom underwater
Do you want to see more during your dive without extra effort? With a DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle), also known as an underwater scooter, you move effortlessly through the water and significantly increase your range. This specialty lets you experience diving in a completely different way. You cover greater distances, explore more of the reef, and at the same time maintain calm, control, and efficiency.
This course is intended for divers who want to expand their dives—whether that's by covering longer distances, using their air more efficiently, or simply adding something new and playful to their diving experience. Good trim and control underwater are important prerequisites, as you move faster with a DPV and have less time to correct. If you still need to work on this, first take our Perfect Buoyancy course or the Advanced Open Water course.
During the course, you will learn how to use a DPV safely and in a controlled manner, both individually and in buddy teams. You will practice the correct use and maintenance of the scooter, your posture and positioning underwater, and maintaining control while "riding." In addition, you will learn to navigate over greater distances, communicate effectively with your buddy, and plan dives where range and gas management play an important role. We also pay attention to what happens if a scooter fails and how to handle this calmly and safely.
The course consists of a combination of theory and practice. After a short theory session, you will first enter the water to master the basic skills in a sheltered environment. Then you will apply these skills during two open water dives, where you will build more control and confidence. In total, the course usually takes one to two days, depending on planning and pace. Upon completion, you will receive the SSI DPV / Scooter Diver Specialty certification, which counts towards the SSI recognition certifications Specialty Diver, Advanced Specialty Diver, and Master Diver.
Curaçao is ideally suited for diving with a DPV. The straight coastline, clear visibility, and gradual transition to deep water make it possible to explore larger parts of the reef in a single dive. With a scooter, you can easily move against light currents and navigate effortlessly along drop-offs and walls. It literally gives you a new perspective on diving around the island.
Diving with a DPV feels different from anything you are used to. You move faster, but with less effort. You see more, but remain relaxed. Many divers describe it as flying underwater.
