Junior Open Water Diver

With the SSI Junior Open Water Diver course, you will learn to dive safely and independently up to 12 or 18 meters. The perfect start for a lifetime of diving adventures, anywhere in the world.

Has your child always wanted to learn how to dive? With the SSI Junior Open Water Diver course, he or she gets the chance to learn to dive in a safe, responsible, and enjoyable way, under the guidance of experienced instructors. This course is specially designed for young divers aged 10 to 14 years.

The Junior Open Water course consists of a combination of theory, practical exercises, and guided open water dives. The theoretical foundation is largely learned in advance through the modern SSI e-learning program, so that the time on Curaçao is mainly spent practicing and experiencing — instead of classroom learning.

We deliberately organize this course at a calm and manageable pace, spread over three days. Each day, we make two dives. We start with exercises in shallow, sheltered water in the bay, where your child gradually becomes familiar with the equipment and basic skills. After that, there are guided dives on the reef, first to 12 meters and — depending on age, comfort, and progress — possibly up to 18 meters, according to the SSI guidelines for juniors.

In total, the course consists of two confined water sessions and four open water dives. This ensures there is enough time to get used to diving, build confidence, and most importantly: have fun, without any rush or pressure.

The dives take place in the bay of Porto Mari, known worldwide as one of the best locations to learn to dive. The water is clear, the conditions are calm, and the underwater life is rich. This means that children see a lot from their very first dives, making the learning process extra fun and motivating.

We consciously work with small groups — often even one-on-one — so that each child receives personal attention. Safety, clear communication, and a pleasant atmosphere are always our top priorities. Our instructors have extensive experience guiding young divers and fully adapt the pace to the child.

Upon completion, your child will receive the internationally recognized SSI Junior Open Water Diver certification. This allows him or her to dive worldwide, always with a buddy and within the applicable junior restrictions. From the age of 15, this certification is automatically converted into a full Open Water Diver certification.
