Classified Open Water

Everyone should be able to experience the underwater world. This program makes diving accessible, with guidance tailored to your abilities.

Dive your way

The SSI Classified Open Water program makes diving accessible for people with a physical disability or sensory challenge. In this program, you learn to dive safely and comfortably, with guidance tailored to your abilities.

The course is based on the standard Open Water Diver program, but is adapted where necessary. You learn the same skills, but the way you perform them may differ. The training is provided by a certified SSI Classified Diving Instructor. Depending on the level and needs of the diver, they may be supported by one or more Classified Dive Buddies and/or a Classified Dive Professional.

During the training, you work step by step on building confidence and control underwater. You start in a sheltered environment and then develop the skills to dive in open water as well. Safety, calmness, and personal guidance are central throughout.

The Classified Diving program works with three levels, depending on the degree of support needed:

  • Level 1 divers dive with one Classified Dive Buddy. They can swim independently and perform all skills, but sometimes need support at the surface or when entering and exiting the water.

  • Level 2 divers dive with two Classified Dive Buddies. They need support underwater for movement and cannot act fully independently in emergency situations.

  • Level 3 divers dive with two Classified Dive Buddies and a Classified Dive Professional. They need continuous support for movement, basic skills, and equipment.

Upon completion, you will receive an SSI Classified Diver certification stating your classification (level 1, 2, or 3), allowing you to dive worldwide within your level with the right guidance.
