Independent Diving course

For experienced divers who want to develop maximum self-reliance, control, and responsibility underwater, there is the SSI Independent Diving Specialty

Dive independently, consciously, and with confidence with the SSI Independent Diving Specialty. This course is designed for experienced divers who want to increase their responsibility and freedom underwater and take their diving skills to the next level.

Although buddy diving is the norm, there are situations where a high degree of self-reliance and independence is essential. The SSI Independent Diving Specialty teaches you how, with the right training, mindset, and equipment, you can dive responsibly and safely on your own. You will develop skills that help you rely entirely on yourself, without losing sight of the safety principles of diving.

This specialty is explicitly not a “solo diving because you can” course. On the contrary: you will learn to consciously recognize risks, assess them correctly, and minimize them where possible. With good preparation, discipline, and thoughtful planning, independent diving can take a valuable and legitimate place within the diving community.

During the course, you will work intensively on dive planning and self-reliance. You will learn to calculate your air consumption accurately and use this to create a conservative dive plan. You will work with redundant equipment, learn to handle possible emergency scenarios without direct assistance, and develop strong situational awareness and problem-solving skills. All of this takes place under the guidance of an experienced instructor, in a controlled and safe learning environment.

The SSI Independent Diving Specialty is specifically designed for experienced divers (at least 75 logged dives and 50+ dive hours) who are looking for maximum control, responsibility, and independence underwater. The training is intensive and requires a mature and responsible attitude.

What you learn during this specialty not only makes you a more independent diver, but also a stronger and safer buddy when you do dive together. You will develop a better understanding of risks, gas planning, and equipment, which is of great value in any diving situation.

Upon completion, you will receive the SSI Independent Diving Specialty certification. This certification counts towards the SSI recognition levels Specialty Diver, Advanced Specialty Diver, and Master Diver. Are you ready to take this step and dive with even more confidence and control?
